Starring Julie Kimelman...back on stage for the first time in 15 years!
I can't believe I've already been here for a week!
Today was the first day we had the morning off, so naturally the ten of us decided to sleep in a bit before sorting out our 2-for-1 tickets. Once everyone was up we sat in a circle in the living room with our computers trying to figure out how to create a master plan for our shows. For the theatre class one of our assignments is to see four shows, each with a different partner, and then write a review for each to present to the class. Monday and Tuesday are 2-for-1 ticket deals for certain shows, and since there are ten of us and over 2,800 shows you can't even begin to imagine what the discussions were like as we tried to choose.
After each of us sat down with the Fringe program (a booklet about twice as thick as a magazine filled with thousands of shows broken down by category: comedy, theatre, musical, music/opera, spoken word, physical theatre, dance etc) and made a list of the shows we wanted to see, we created a google excel document, put all of the information for each show in a chart, and went through one by one creating a schedule of shows around our already packed schedule of internship and class time. A trip to the ATM later each of us had pretty close to exact change for our ticket price totals, pooled the money and took a walk to the Fringe Central box office. After waiting in line for about 15 minutes, we walked up to the woman at the counter and promptly read off "8 tickets for this, 4 tickets for that, 6 tickets for this..." for each of the 12 shows we will collectively be seeing on Monday and Tuesday. Needless to say she was impressed with our organization, but even more impressed with our exact change. Business and management students make a pretty solid team!

Tonight was the opening night for our Traverse Through Time series! After a bit of chaos, everything fell into place and the event went extremely well! I got to learn a little about the video recording of the event, and was responsible for the house center camera. Tonight's speakers were artistic directors who spoke about what it was like to work in the old Traverse theater compared to the new venue--which one of the directors has never been to!
After Traverse Through Time, we were invited to the Gryphon Venue launch party held on the top floor of the Point Hotel. The fifth floor has an amazing balcony with a view of the Edinburgh Castle.

Though the beginning of the party was slow, as the night progressed I had the opportunity to spend a significant amount of time talking with Chris and Heather (the actor and stage manager) from American Gun Show. Talking to Heather was fantastic, she explained how she became involved with stage management and the steps she took to become an international touring stage manager. Chris was hilarious, suggesting that our group write and produce a musical about our living situation. Speaking with them was not only fun, but a fabulous networking opportunity; Heather gave me a contact in the Fringe Central marketing office, so hopefully I will be able to make an appointment to talk to him about future opportunities.
